Why We Run

Loui Gravgaard

“Running helps me remember - and move forward at the same time.”

Running - from loss to purpose

Loui Gravgaard is a 26 year old physiotherapy student based in Holstebro, where he lives with his girlfriend. Alongside his studies, he works as a massage therapist at FysioDanmark and as a coach at a training and pain clinic, Sundhedsgården. Training is a central part of his everyday life - strength training, running, and HYROX all play a role - but running holds a deeper meaning.

For most of his life, Loui played elite-level football, where running was simply part of the game. But in 2021, everything changed. He lost his father to suicide, and football suddenly became inseparable from grief, as his father was connected to his former club. Stepping away from the sport was necessary - but it left a void. As Loui describes it:

“I needed something where I could shut off my head and just keep moving.”

Running became that place for him. A refuge where he could process loss, clear his mind, and focus on one simple thing: putting one foot in front of the other: “When I run, everything else disappears - I just focus on the next step,” he explains. Over time, running became a way to carry his father with him - especially on race days.

Every year on his father’s birthday, Loui runs the number of kilometers his father would have turned. Not as a challenge or a performance, but as a personal ritual. A way of remembering. A way of keeping the connection alive. For Loui, running is no longer just movement - it’s meaning, memory, and a quiet form of presence that stays with him long after the run is over.

“Running started as a way to process the loss of my father. At first, it was about finding calm and somewhere to put my thoughts. Over time, it’s grown into something more - about community, strength, and personal development. Today, I don’t only run for my father, but also for myself, and to show others that movement can create meaning, even in difficult times.”

Running as Healing and Energy

In his everyday life, running is Loui’s space to disconnect - a place where he can step away from the noise and find calm in both body and mind. As he runs, his thoughts begin to settle, his focus shifts to his breathing and movement, and the rhythm of each step creates a sense of balance. After a run, he feels lighter, both mentally and physically, as stress is replaced by clarity and renewed energy. It’s therapy in motion.

Even when runs become tough, Loui keeps going. What drives him is the understanding that every difficult moment builds mental strength and trust in himself - especially on days when motivation is low. Discipline, he believes, is shaped in those moments, and it’s precisely what makes the easier periods feel even more rewarding.

Community, Emotion, and Meaning

One of Loui’s strongest running memories dates back to 2023, when he ran 100 kilometers for the first time in memory of his father during the charity event Søenx, raising money for the Danish Mental Health Foundation. The cause was deeply personal, and the experience unforgettable. Since then, Loui has become a co-organizer of the event, which this year gathered more than 250 runners and raised over 160,000 DKK. Everyone ran for their own reason, but the sense of support and togetherness was shared by all.

That same year, Loui ran the 100 kilometers for the third time and was there at the finish line to welcome his two brothers, who completed 100 km and 50 km respectively for the first time. The moment left him overwhelmed with emotion and reminded him of what running can create beyond the physical effort - a space where emotions are allowed and community truly comes to life.

Over time, Loui’s “why” has evolved. What started as a way to process grief gradually became a source of strength and structure, and today it’s also about community, personal development, and inspiration. He now runs not only for his father, but also for himself and to show others that movement can create meaning, even in difficult times. Running has become a natural part of who he is - supported by consistent training, strength work, and HYROX sessions - and something that continues to give him direction, motivation, and connection.

Running Brands - Values That Matter

For Loui, running brands matter most when they stand for something real. He’s inspired by brands he can genuinely see himself in - brands rooted in authenticity, dedication, and a strong sense of community. That’s why Toujours Actif resonates so naturally with him. To Loui, it feels personal and genuine; a Danish brand that aligns closely with his own values and approach to running.

The apparel matches the way he trains: functional, comfortable over long distances, and designed with intention rather than unnecessary details. It allows him to focus on the run itself instead of the gear. As he puts it, it reflects how he trains - dedicated and goal-oriented, but always with joy at the center.

His favorite item is the Running T-shirt. It performs reliably on long runs, feels comfortable against the skin, and supports his movement without distraction. For Loui, the clothing does more than just support his training - it reflects his mindset and the way he chooses to show up, both in running and in everyday life.

Reflection - Finding Your Why

If Loui were to describe running, he would call it a journey. Some days feel light and effortless. Other days are a battle. But through it all, running offers freedom, therapy, and challenge - often at the same time.

And his advice to anyone searching for their “why”?

“Start by listening to yourself - not to what others expect. Don’t compare yourself. Find joy in the process and in the small wins. Your ‘why’ doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be real.”
